The story

A quiet house on an open lot.

The owners wanted a home that felt calm, let in a lot of light and would age well without much fuss. They also wanted to know, at every step, what was happening and why.

We started on the land. We walked it at different times of day, marked where the sun came in and where the wind came from, and kept the house low to the ground on the exposed side.

The tall gable holds the living space and a single wall of glass that faces the garden. A lower wing tucks the bedrooms away from the road. Cedar, concrete and steel do most of the talking.

Inside, it is simple. Oak floors, a stone kitchen and deep window sills you can sit on. Every material was chosen with the owners at a table, with samples in hand.

Plan / Ground floor

Drawn around the light.

Living spaces face the garden. Bedrooms sit on the quiet side. The covered terrace links the two.

Materials

Five materials. Nothing extra.

Western red cedar

Vertical boards, left to weather to a soft silver grey.

Board-formed concrete

Poured against rough timber so the grain stays in the wall.

Black steel windows

Slim frames that keep the views wide and the lines clean.

White oak

Wide planks underfoot, finished in a matte natural oil.

Honed stone

Kitchen counters and the hearth, cool and quiet to the touch.
